NextGen Rollator – Participation meets Innovation

Funding Program for Research and Development Projects at Universities of Applied Sciences (HAW) – Innovative Projekte/ Kooperationsprojekte, Ausschreibungsrunde 2024 - „IP 2024"

The interdisciplinary research project “NextGen Rollator” is developing new technical solutions for the mobility of people with walking impairments. The aim is to fundamentally redesign the traditional rollator and significantly improve its functions and adaptability.

In close cooperation with the Sozialstation Esslingen and various experts, users are actively involved in the development process. Through participatory methods such as interviews, creative workshops, and practical tests, innovative prototypes are being created that rethink stability, weight, braking systems, and adjustability from a technical perspective.

The innovative project is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg and follows an interdisciplinary approach that combines engineering (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Franziska Meinecke) and nursing science (Prof. Dr. Astrid Elsbernd). The goal is to advance the technological development of rollators and thereby sustainably improve the quality of life of people with limited mobility.
